Toddler Program
18 months - 2.5 years | Nurturing independence and exploration in a safe environment
Toddler Program (18 months - 2.5 years)
When your child reaches the toddler stage, they have reached their first milestone. They are no longer infants and have grown into the mobile stage where they begin to investigate and explore the world around them. Toddler children are capable of intense periods of concentration. Toddlers absorb knowledge from everything they see and do.
At King City Montessori School, our energetic and caring teachers encourage and gently guide each toddler through this important exploratory and discovery stage. knowledgeable educators provide a program that meets each childs needs during this formative period of development.
Your child will be exposed to a quiet playing and reading area. In this area, your child can choose to participate independently in a range of logic games and puzzles, and many more stimulating activities that allow them to develop. To an adult their work might look like play, but to a Toddler, it is an extraordinary learning period requiring all of their concentration. The classroom environment is designed to allow them to build trust and to instill a love of learning. Learning self-help skills is an important part of the toddler curriculum. Toddlers step into a loving, warm space where everything, from the furniture to the sensory materials- has been created with their rapid growth in mind. A very small teacher-student ratio of 1:5 ensures that each child is given the care he or she needs.
Toddlers will experience following activities:
Toddlers engage in a variety of stimulating activities designed to foster their development. Interactive play, music, and dance provide creative outlets, while age-appropriate fitness toys and activities keep them on the move. Outdoor time involves plenty of fresh air and sunshine, encouraging social engagement.
Practical life and self-help skills are a core focus. Children learn to use a spoon, wash their hands, dress and undress themselves, and clean up after themselves. Potty training and beginner daily life skills are also integrated into the routine, supporting their growing independence.
The curriculum emphasizes sensory work through cutting, pasting, puzzles, sewing, sorting, and painting to develop fine motor skills and sensory perception. Language development is nurtured using materials such as language cards, songs, books, and poems. Toddlers also participate in short group circle times to build social skills, learning to share with peers and help one another.
Imaginary play and creative arts offer further enrichment, alongside a colorful assortment of reading options. To balance the activity, a daily nap and quiet, soothing books help unwind a busy toddler.
Toddlers will develop following skills:
The program supports the development of essential skills, including eye-hand coordination and both fine and gross motor skills. Children build self-confidence and learn to feel comfortable with new people and places, fostering a sense of security and independence.
Socially, toddlers develop sharing, caring, grace, and courtesy, learning to interact positively with others. They also learn to independently care for themselves, their peers, and the classroom environment, which are key components of Practical Life skills.
Cognitive growth is encouraged through the development of vocabulary and language skills, as well as decision-making and problem-solving abilities. Sensorial skills are also refined, with a focus on visual, chromatic, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory senses, along with the discrimination of shapes.
